Achieving higher dielectric constants and miniaturization of SLCs

SLCs are embedded into circuits within RF communication devices and optical transceiver modules, used for coupling, decoupling, DC block and impedance matching applications. With the commercialization of 5G using higher frequency bands, smallerhigh-frequency compatible components are required for the communication equipment. To support this, it is essential to increase the dielectric constant to realize downsizing of SLCs.

The SolutionHow the issue was solved

Developing a single layer ceramic capacitor lineup with extremely high dielectric constant

Tecdia utilizes a class IV GBBL (Grain Boundary Barrier Layer) dielectric material to achieve ultra-high effective dielectric constant materials. The dielectric constants of the materials we developed and now manufacture entirely in-house are 16,000, 30,000 and 50,000.

The GBBL structure consists of a conductive ceramic that is in contact with a thin insulating grain boundary barrier layer, resulting in a very high dielectric constant not possible with conventional dielectric materials. SLCs using this GBBL ultra-high dielectric boast excellent temperature characteristics, high breakdown voltage, and high reliability.
